lovin the local scene

Friday, January 6, 2012

We've been busy preparing for the Jubilee in January (full details here). And while the evening is focused on the featured artists and their successes, those same artists are offering their own thanks for the local scene that has helped to foster their careers.

“Growing up playing music in a relatively small community doesn't present many opportunities to play on a large stage, or in front of a large crowd, as conjured in the imaginations of every young aspiring musician,” says Alert the Medic’s Ryan MacDonald.

“The New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee will always hold a special place deep in the heart of Alert the Medic. We recall the days of being spectators at this larger than life event; watching McKeel blow the shingles from the roof. Big stage, huge sound and a spectacular light show stirred aspirations of someday being fortunate enough to be a part of this grand festival. We were obviously shaking with excitement when invited to perform, as RUDY, in our first Jubilee almost a decade ago. From that moment forward, The Riverfront Jubilee has been pivotal in the growth and development of Alert the Medic.”

MacDonald goes on to acknowledge that having high caliber events and concert venues in the community are incredibly important to providing the experiences that spark that first inspiration and then provide the opportunities to grow. “In an industry where reassurances are as common as Bigfoot sightings, the Jubilee, its Committee and Volunteers as well as the community we grew up in, are all constant reminders that we are on the right track.”

Jon Landry from The Stanfield’s echoes very similar sentiments, “When spending a year on the road playing for audiences across the continent, its a real treat to come home and take part in the Riverfront Jubilee. The level of production, professionalism and attendance has played a significant role in the development of The Stanfields, from our early days as spectators to our role as performers in recent years. This perspective, from both sides of the stage, has given us insight, inspiration and guidance in our endeavours.”

The Jubilee in January will take place January 14 at Glasgow Square and feature Dave Gunning, The Stanfield’s, Alert the Medic and Fleur Mainville. It will be an evening of memorable performances and moments as some of the back-stories on the road to success are going to be shared. Tickets are $30 each plus applicable fees and are available at Glasgow Square, Big Al’s Convenience, www.ticketpro.ca, or by calling 1-888-311-9090.

We'd like to give a big thanks the artists who are donating their performances in support of the Jubilee and live music in Pictou County. Thanks also to our media partners: Big Dog 100.9, XFM 98.9, and 101.5 The Hawk and our accommodation partner, Country Inn & Suites New Glasgow.
